Lions go Quackers

At their canal fun day and duck race, Kingswinford & Stourbridge Lions Club combined their fundraising with a great day out for local families. The Event was held on 9th June on the playing fields adjacent to Wordsley Canal Junction. As well as the main event of racing ducks from the lock, there was canoeing, boat trips and stalls representing various local charities.

Proceeds from the race and food sales will go to one of the Lions current charities, Papyrus which works to prevent teenage suicides and the event has also helped the other charities attending to promote their efforts and raise funds.

Duck Race

Following the success of last year’s Duck Race we are holding this year’s on Sunday 9th June. The day will open at 12 o’clock and will be held at the Stourbridge Canal Junction.

Parking will be off Kinver Street, Amblecote where there will be stalls and refreshments.

The race will take place at 3 pm – each duck will cost £1

Santa’s Sleigh

A record total of £9810 was raised when Santa made his tour of the local area in his sleigh over the weekends leading up to Christmas, meeting and talking to local children and handing out sweets to everyone he met.

Over 25 Cheques were presented to local Charities and good causes that assisted with the Sleigh runs, The Paul Akrill Fund, Ridgewood High School Association, Brierley Hill and Kingswinford RNLI, St Mary’s Church – Kingswinford, Insight for Carers, Brierley Hill Samaritans, The Salvation Army, Friends of Young Achievers, Women v Breast Cancer, Red Box Project and many Local Scout and Guide Groups were just some of the recipients from the money raised.

Kingswinford and Stourbridge Lions help to make our Big Push wheelchair campaign a roaring success

THE News Group’s Big Push Campaign is proving a roaring success – just weeks after it was launched.

Fundraising group The Kingswinford and Stourbridge Lions have become the latest community organisation to buy a brand new wheelchair for Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley as part of our drive to raise £30,000 to fund 50 new state-of-the-art chairs for use by patients and frail visitors.

And thanks to the generous donation of £600 – the campaign, which we are running in partnership with the Dudley Group NHS Charity, has now topped £8,000.

Karen Rice, spokesman for the Kingswinford and Stourbridge Lions Club, said: “When we read about the wheelchair campaign we felt it was something we could help out with as we always try to support local charities and people.”

The donation from the Lions comes thick and fast after Dudley Zoo bosses took along mascot Jambi the tiger to test out the chair they have recently sponsored.

Karen Phillips, fundraising manager for the Dudley Group NHS Charity, said she’s delighted at how the community has embraced the campaign and it’s not the first time the Lions have generously supported the hospital.

Last year the dedicated members donated an Accuvein machine to Russells Hall after a year-long fundraising campaign to buy the state-of-the-art machine. Karen said: “It was good to meet up again with Kate Parkes and Mike Blaxland from the Kingswinford and Stourbridge Lions. They are regular supporters of the hospital charity and we are so grateful to them for sponsoring a wheelchair.”
